VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT RESOURCES
VALUE OF VOLUNTEER HOURS
A new study by Independent Sector, a coalition of approximately 600 charities, foundations, and corporate giving programs, revealed that the estimated hourly dollar value of volunteer time for 2008 amounts to $20.25. The value of volunteer time presented in the report is based on the average wage of non-management, non-agricultural workers as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Independent sector increases this figure by 12% to take into account fringe benefits. The average dollar value per hour varies by state and ranges from $14.13 in Montana to $28.04 in New York.
The Financial Accounting Standards Board notes that the value of volunteer time can be used on financial statements, such as those required for grant proposals and annual reports, only if the volunteer is providing a specialized skill for the nonprofit. A specialized skill is defined as one which the nonprofit would otherwise have had to purchase had it not been donated by the volunteer.
